The Best Living History Museum

In the summer of 2022, as we planned our fall trip, we had the Ark Encounter in Kentucky as our primary destination. However, my husband, who tends to think big, suggested a detour to the RV Museum in Elkhart, Indiana, to see KYD’s bird. That’s how our journey evolved, and it led us to Greenfield Village in Dearborn, Michigan—a living history museum.

Henry Ford, the man behind the Ford Motor Company and the assembly line, is a figure of both innovation and controversy. He revolutionized the automobile industry by creating the first affordable car.

Greenfield Village, a sprawling 200-acre park with nearly 100 historical buildings, is a testament to Henry Ford’s passion for preserving the past. Dressed in period clothes, characters within the village possess deep knowledge of the era they represent. The experience feels like a step back in time, where you can interact with the past.

One of my most memorable experiences was at the general store, where I immersed myself in a conversation with the “general store owner.” The authenticity of the store and the opportunity to touch and explore items from a bygone era left me astounded. I learned that much of what’s housed in the village came from Henry Ford’s extensive collection. His company spent years cataloging and organizing the treasures he amassed.

Henry Ford’s dedication to preserving history is evident throughout Greenfield Village. His childhood home is there, along with replicas of items he couldn’t find. The village is a tribute to the past, offering a glimpse into the way people lived and worked during the late 1800s and early 1900s.

While visiting the village, you can explore Thomas Edison’s Menlo Lab, where he made groundbreaking inventions, including the filament for the lightbulb. The village also features the courthouse where Abraham Lincoln once tried cases and the Wright Brothers’ childhood home and bicycle shop.

In preparation for our trip to Greenfield Village, we delved into the lives and contributions of historical figures such as Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, and Harvey Firestone. These individuals played significant roles in shaping American history, and their connections were fascinating to explore.

Greenfield Village was initially designed as a hands-on experiential school, with an emphasis on learning through experience. The educational value of this living history museum is undeniable. We believe that every child in America should have the opportunity to visit The Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village.
