Kentucky Horse Park
As our tour of the Midwest continues, we were drawn to the captivating allure of the Kentucky Horse Park and campground. This remarkable place spans a vast 1200 acres, functioning as a working horse farm while also serving as an educational hub, enlightening visitors on mankind's longstanding relationship with horses throughout history. Affiliated with the Smithsonian, the Museum of the Horse, located within the Kentucky Horse Park, stands as one of the largest horse museums worldwide. Notably, it hosts The Al-Marah Arabian Horse Galleries, showcasing the Arabian horses depicted in classic children's literature, including the legendary Black Stallion Experience. With a plethora of exhibits and museums displaying the evolution of equestrian history, this place had us in awe from the very beginning.
Our children were thrilled to meet the police horses in the Police Barn and explore the self-guided Children's Barn. However, we highly recommend checking out the scheduled activities to make the most of your visit. Don't miss the Parade of Breeds show at the Breeds Barn, where you'll learn about various horse breeds and their fascinating histories.
While we missed the scheduled demonstration time at the breed barn, being in such close proximity to these majestic creatures was an experience in itself. The barn also houses an impressive collection of carriages, providing a captivating glimpse into the world of equestrian transportation.
To delve deeper into the park's splendor, we opted for the 25-minute trolley ride, which offered a wonderful overview of the vast grounds. For an even more immersive experience, we decided to embark on a horseback tour—an additional expense not covered by park admission but unquestionably worth it for the memories it provided our family.
Our stay at the Kentucky Horse Park campground was nothing short of wonderful. Although the sites lacked sewer hookups, their ample size and picturesque surroundings more than compensated for it. The location's convenience was unbeatable, granting us easy access to nearby attractions like Evan's Orchard, Clairborne Farm, the Ark Encounter, and the charming city of Lexington.
Our visit to the Kentucky Horse Park and campground left an indelible mark on our hearts. This unique destination seamlessly blends history, education, and natural beauty, making it an ideal retreat for families and equestrian enthusiasts alike. Whether you're mesmerized by the Museum Of The Horse or thrilled by the chance to meet these gentle giants up close, the Kentucky Horse Park offers an unforgettable experience that will remain etched in your memory forever.
